Lake Murray State Park Enhances Accessibility with New Action TrackChair

ARDMORE, August 20, 2024— To promote accessibility within Oklahoma State Parks, the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department (OTRD) has unveiled a new Action TrackChair at Lake Murray State Park that is designed to help individuals with disabilities navigate a specially designed trail.

“This new TrackChair and specialized trail allows us to offer unique outdoor experiences to visitors with limited mobility and is a critical step in ensuring our state parks are equipped to serve all Oklahomans,” said Shelley Zumwalt, Executive Director of the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department. “Our team at Lake Murray looks forward to sharing this resource with those who need it, as well as facilitating programming, such as guided hikes, on the new trail to best serve our park guests.”

Through a competitive application process, Lake Murray State Park was one of 10 state parks across the country awarded grant funding for the Action TrackChair, made possible through Ford Motor Company’s Bronco Wild Fund and the National Association of State Park Directors. Additionally, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation supported this initiative by supplying millings (recycled roadway) for the trail base.

“Going for a hike in nature is a privilege that many Oklahomans don’t have,” said Lisa Holley, Executive Director of Sunshine Industries. “Today, the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department restored freedom of movement to a very underserved and sometimes invisible community. Lake Murray is a beautiful park, and I’m thankful that this TrackChair and specialized trail will make nature more accessible for all park visitors.”

The new trail follows portions of the Buckhorn Trail over a 1.4-mile out-and-back route, leading to a stunning overlook. The trail features interpretive signs and a picnic table specifically designed for Action TrackChair users. Those interested in using the chair can reserve it at no cost, at least 24 hours prior to use, at the Lake Murray State Park office or by calling (580) 223-6600.
